Don't mention it. It's easy to forget that people outside the industry don't always know the more devious inner workings of advertising. For instance, I meet people all the time who don't understand that many of the search results they get when they go to Google, Yahoo, MSN and other search engines are being paid for by advertisers. Or that the Coke that Simon Cowell reaches for when he's thirsty didn't just get there by accident.

Hi Faithful, thanks for the comment. As Word of Mouth matures as an advertising tactic, there are processes and networks for identifying people with the most influence and then reaching out to them. The more this process gets automated, the more likely the messages pumped through this channel become less authentic and less trustworthy.

A classic example is if I walked into a bar and a beautiful woman started talking to me. Eventually, being the gallant gentleman that I am (unmarried for the example, of course), I ask her if I can buy her a drink. She tells me that she'd love a Stoli Huckleberry on the rocks. A Stoli Huckleberry? I've never heard of that I say. And she proceeds to tell me all about how it's made from the rarest of Huckleberries harvested above 90,000 feet by hearty old babushkas in the Catskills. If she's just a fan and really loves the drink, that's one thing. But what if she's actually being paid by a Word of Mouth marketing company hired by Stoli to go into bars and push their new flavor as a marketing ploy? That's what I mean when I mean when I say that some companies are playing on their perceptions of our gullibility. Campaigns that are pretty close to what I've described have been run for new cell/camera phone launches, alcohol, movies and more.

MDs, DDSs,lawyers, neighborhood businesses, etc., have traditionally relied on word of mouth (advertising)to build a following. And, yes, we do ask people we trust for those names, relying on their experiences until we can form our own opinion and begin the next phase of establising trust. Doesn't it work the same way with the large companies to which you referred?
