Since this post, a friend pointed out that there are other shredded uniform cards out there already. Including one from 2001 of Joe Dimaggio here:http://cardboardicons.com/2008/07/14/card-of-the-day-2001-upper-deck-hall-of-famers-game-jersey-joe-dimaggio/

There have already been other cards and collectibles with slivers of Ruth's uniform and his bat. And it doesn't stop there. There are also cards with strands of hair and signatures on them, including Abe Lincoln. They're part of the Upper Deck Legendary Cuts series (though what Honest Abe has to do with baseball cards escapes me a bit).
Oh well... thanks for you comment, FR.

I'm appalled at the idea of destroying these artifacts of the baseball history that meant so much to my childhood and that of many others in the name of sales tie-ins. I do like your friend's idea and your reference to a potential boycott of the campaign just might resonate with baseball lovers. Maybe these and other uniforms and equipment should be granted historical status to protect them from marketing vultures. Otherwise, the next thing we know, Willie Mays' and Ted Williams' bats will be turned into toothpicks to hand out with hotdogs at the ballpark.
